Trash Can Cookers was established in May of 2011. Head Cook Monte Brown started competition cooking for fun but was quickly hooked after early success. He didn't want to invest a lot of money to get started, so rather than getting a professional pit, Monte made himself a set of ugly drum smokers out of 55 gallon drums. This opened the door for some teasing from the other cooks about Monte cooking on "trash cans" and is how his team name Trash Can Cookers came to be.
Monte finished his first year and a half on his "trash can" pits and did quite well, with several grand and reserve championships. Eventually, he upgraded to professional pits and then made his first trip to Kansas City to compete in the Kansas City Royal Cook-Off.
Monte's busiest year so far was 2013. He competed in 20 contests and finished the year with six grand championships and six reserves. In May of that year, Monte traveled to Magnolia, AR to compete in the World Championship Steak Cook-Off. He was named the World Champion and brought the governor's cup home to Texas!
All of this success has lead to some fun opportunities. Monte has filmed a nationwide commercial for Grill Grates, been featured on American Grilled, on the Food Network, and made a guest appearance on the morning show, San Antonio Living.
Monte has a strong passion for cooking and competing and loves to hit the trail every chance he gets. Even when he's not competing, you will often find him at home trying new methods and recipes or barbecuing for family gatherings. Monte resides in Victoria, TX with his wife and three children.
